Felicity WhiteSmall Group Trader Contributor College Small Group Leader
My husband Dan and I currently serve at Heartland Community Church in
rural northeast Missouri as worship leaders and teachers. I was born in
this region, but my husband comes from Omaha, Nebraska, where he left a
big piece of his heart and hopes to return someday. We have four
gorgeous and talented children: Jesse (8), Claire (6), Ada (5), and
Macy (2). If the kids were reading this, they would be quick to remind
me that we also have a daughter in Heaven, Ellery Blythe, our glory
baby.
We stand with many in the communion of suffering and it keeps our eyes
more focused on eternity. Not that we don’t enjoy our earth time, too!
Our fluffy dog is named Chuck – for the shoes Dan wears and for a
favorite author of mine, Charles Dickens. Coming from strong Christian
homes, Dan and I hope to recreate the same kind of oasis in our own
family. We are each other’s biggest fans, and life together is our joy.
I am also a full-time student pursing an English degree with plans for
grad school and more writing. I love to learn, especially in the form
of story. Right now my small group is a Monday/Thursday breakfast
gathering at the college girls’ house. We love Jesus, each other,
coffee and carbs!
Felicity White Interview with Editor of Small Group Trader:
Small Group Trader: When did you decide to serve in Small Group Ministry?
Felicity White: I am a teacher at Heartland Christian College. My
involvement with small groups is as the leader of a bi-weekly small
group we have for our female students in their dormitory.
Small Group Trader: What encouragement would you offer to small group leaders out there?
Felicity White: Leading a small group is one of the toughest jobs in
Christian ministry! But it is also one of the more valuable jobs. My
encouragement is that small group leaders keep pressing toward
authentic relationships in their communal pursuit of God. Also, don’t
measure yourself after every meeting. Give it some time. Watching the
long-term effects on your group is more useful than critiquing your
performance each week.
Small Group Trader: In what ways have you and your spouse/family
grown spiritually since you have been involved in this ministry?
Felicity White: Leading the young women in my group forces me to
communicate my faith authentically. Knowing I will face them every week
means I’m more interested in walking out my everyday faith with grace
when I’m not with them.
Small Group Trader: Why does small group ministry play such a critical role in the church today?
Felicity White: Our world is disconnected, selfish, and shallow in
relational terms. Small groups are important to the church because they
train Christians to fight these natural tendencies. The goal of small
groups is to connect us to one another, learning to serve within our
group and without, and inspire us to know God more – going deeper into
our relationship with Him.
