Collegiate Small Group Ministry, Fellowship Evangelical Free Church

I am in my 30s and live in Knoxville, Tennessee with my husband, Greg, and my Boxer puppy, Bailey.  With a background in School Counseling, I am now working to form a non-profit ministry aimed at the one-on-one discipleship of young women with the aim of equipping women of all ages to follow through with the call to disciple further generations.

My passion is leading young women to cling to the transforming truth of God’s word whether in one-on-one and/or small group situations.  I have been leading small groups for the last 10 years and serve as the volunteer coordinator for our Collegiate small group ministry at Fellowship Evangelical Free Church where my husband is the Teaching Pastor.

In my “spare” time, I love to journal in the hammock, paint with acrylics, listen to good music, read theology and good fiction, blog, travel with my husband as he speaks, watch movies with my husband and laugh a lot!  Come visit my blog at www.jenpinkner.wordpress.com.  And check out our church and sermons from our city-wide collegiate worship service at www.crossroad.fefc.com.

Jennifer Pinkner Interview with Small Group Trader:

Small Group Trader: When did you decide to serve in Small Group Ministry?

Jennifer Pinkner: Small group ministry found me as I saw the need for the discipleship of teenage girls and college and young adult women.  There is a unique authenticity that comes through learning and growing together in a small group. It is exciting to see a training ground within a group to feast on God’s word and practice what it says as the group struggles and grows and serves together.

What encouragement would you offer to small group leaders out there?

Jennifer Pinkner: Not all small group leaders look alike. I would encourage small group leaders to lead within their gifting. The church needs leaders who are authentically seeking Christ daily in His word and relationship. Let Him lead you as you cling to Him, the Vine. It takes time to establish a group. Do not be afraid to try new things or scrap things that are not working.

In what ways have you and your spouse/family grown spiritually since you have been involved in this ministry?

Jennifer Pinkner: The Lord has given us a bigger thirst to disciple young women and men within our family.  We also see the great need in ourselves to be diligent about personal holiness and confession of sin and repentance. I have seen that I have grown as a leader as conflict and hard questions have entered into the group setting. I have grown in my personal relationship with Christ as I have relied on Him as I have learned to speak the truth in love.

Why does small group ministry play such a critical role in the church today?

Jennifer Pinkner: People may listen to good teaching, but there has to be a way to flesh out the realities of everyday living in accordance with the Truth. Most of the time, we learn to apply the truth by experience within relationships and circumstances. It is all theory to us until the truth is wrestled with and lived out in our families and friendships. Small groups create a laboratory to practice trusting God and his word.
