Youth Pastor, Corry First United Methodist Church
“God has a sense of humor. You are living proof.”
This sentence could be used to describe Brett Hetherington, or a duck-billed platypus. Either way, it would be true. You see, God has gifted Brett with the ability to see the humor in most situations, and the courage to step out and share it with those around him. But humor is not the extent of either Brett’s abilities or his passion.
Brett was called into Student Ministry as a senior in high school. He then graduated from Geneva College with a degree in Student Ministries, and a beautiful wife whose passions lie in the same field. They have since given birth to an amazing daughter Abigail, who takes up a lot of their time and energy (as all babies do), and provides many distractions and conversation starters with teenagers.
Brett has had the pleasure of serving people in Iquitos, Peru, ministering to teenagers across three states, learning to play the guitar in order to lead others in worship through music, how to put together a decent video or two (a week), and participating in his rather sizable immediate family in Ohio.
Brett desires to introduce teens and adults alike to the person of Jesus through many different practices, showing them new and exciting ways that they can encounter God in the small parts of their day-to-day living.
“God has a love for creativity and for teaching. You are living proof.”
Brett Hetherington Interview with Small Group Trader:
Small Group Trader: When did you decide to serve in Small Group Ministry?
Brett Hetherington: We are actually in the process of initiating small groups here in our student ministry program. Being a product of a small group in high school, and leading them within a few other ministries, I have seen the value and benefit that they will bring to our student ministry.
Small Group Trader: What encouragement would you offer to small group leaders out there?
Brett Hetherington: Spend time in your materials and in prayer before beginning to lead your group. Too many times we try to breeze through without preparing fully, and trying to do things without God’s guidance. Prepare and Pray.
Small Group Trader: In what ways have you and your family grown spiritually since you have been involved in this ministry?
Brett Hetherington: We have been given more of an opportunity to engage in the Sabbath, and have been blessed to be surrounded by many other Christians who really do desire to grow on their own. We have been challenged to do the same as a result.
Small Group Trader: Why does small group ministry play such a critical role in the church today?
Brett Hetherington: It draws people back into the realization that church is not a place to gather once a week to observe, but a living organism that requires constant involvement and dedication to really grow.
